Baptist (African-American)

A listing of area black Baptist churches in 1942 included four located in Oil City. A local resident, C. H. Patterson served as pastor of churches in Gilliam, Mira, and Myrtis.

The following is what could be found on the pastors identified:

S. P. Griffin (1895-1958) is buried in the Saint John Church Cemetery #1; KSLA Road; Caddo Parish, LA.

B. Love - no information found.

L. R Matan - no information found.

C. H. "Charlie" Pattison (b. `1890) and family were living in Oil City in 1930 per the U. S. Census. He is listed as age 40, with occupation of preacher. His family included wife Trudy (28), daughter Clarice (2-1/2), and son C. H. (7 months).

Rev. M. B. Mitchell (b. ~1896) was living in the general Belcher-Dixie area in 1940, age 44, listed as a farmer living with wife Vera (44) and son Fordell (18). Also in the household were grandchildren O. B. Cooks (6) and Ernestine Farling (3). Per his World War II draft registration he was born in Bossier Parish and then a resident of Dixie.
