Oil City residents have received national attention on several occasions over the years. There is of course the recent drafting of Robert Williams by the Boston Celtics that is fresh in our minds. During World War II, Private Oran Lee Woodard appeared in a photo shown around the country of a group of five volunteers who completed an extremely difficult mission on Guadalcanal Island in the Pacific. And actor Earl Holliman certainly received his share of national press during the heyday of his career.
But on 11-Jul-1963, the name of another member of the OC family appeared in the Shreveport newspaper; as well as in those of other cities ranging from Missoula, MT, to Lincoln, NE, to Indianapolis, IN, and even beyond the U.S. border to British Columbia, Canada. Eighth-grader Sharon Wilson's submission of an egg shaped like a swan was included in the nationally syndicated feature "Ripley's Believe It Or Not."
